Elimination Chamber match preview: John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus vs. The Shield

Elimination Chamber match preview: John Cena, Ryback & Sheamus vs. The Shield

For months, the mysterious Shield triumvirate of Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins & Roman Reigns has disrupted high-profile bouts and waged countless sneak attacks under the pretense of upholding “justice” in WWE. At Elimination Chamber, the brazen upstarts may get their own taste of justice, however, when they face the WWE super team of John Cena, Sheamus & Ryback.

One week after falling victim to The Shield’s numbers game, the Cenation leader recruited Sheamus and Ryback — other prominent Shield victims — and challenged the rebellious trio to a six-man tag just moments after the Feb. 4 edition of Raw went off the air.
Cena promised that at Elimination Chamber, The Shield would finally get a fair fight in the form of WWE’s super trio, whose three members have each had run-ins with the justice-seeking team. The open challenge came on the heels of a seeming groundswell of momentum working against The Shield.

Though largely unchallenged to date, Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns experienced perhaps their biggest setback following an attack on Brad Maddox. The ambush occurred at the invitation of the rogue referee, who challenged The Shield mere seconds after admitting to giving Mr. McMahon the video that revealed the trio’s alleged collusion with Paul Heyman and CM Punk.

While Ambrose, Rollins & Reigns were successful in downing the loudmouth Maddox, thrashing him with a Triple Powerbomb, they ran into trouble once Cena, Ryback and Sheamus — taking a page out of The Shield’s playbook — made a surprise entrance through the WWE Universe. With the help of a slew of WWE fan favorites who blocked The Shield’s exit up the Raw ramp, Cena, Sheamus & Ryback proudly turned back The Shield, sending them packing through the crowd.

The Shield’s first official sanctioned match in WWE, a chaotic Tables, Ladders & Chairs Match against WWE Tag Team Champions Team Hell No & Ryback in December, left the WWE Universe speechless and bolstered the group’s claims of dominance. But against one of the most impressive assemblies in WWE history, does the treacherous trio have a chance of improving their record to 2-0? Regardless of which team comes out on top Feb. 17, the WWE Universe will assuredly be watching with bated breath.

Brad Maddox called out The Shield and was attacked; John Cena, Ryback and Sheamus joined the fight and laid out a challenge

John Cena vowed to take his grievances to The Shield, but what the WWE Universe got instead was ... Brad Maddox?

Brad Maddox it was, then. The disgraced former referee was the one who took to the ring to summon The Shield for a lesson in so-called justice, revealing in the process that he had turned over the footage of Paul Heyman’s confession to Mr. McMahon the previous week and also christening himself the “hero” of the WWE Universe for exposing the heinous plot of the men in black to help keep CM Punk as WWE Champion. And then, in a maneuver that was perhaps short on sanity but not on courage, Maddox called The Shield out himself.

To put what happened next simply: They obliged him.

Dean Ambrose, Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns materialized from the crowd when Maddox laid down his challenge, slandering him as a “rat.” As for their dealings with Heyman? Well as Ambrose said, “No one ever said justice was free.” The trio slowly surrounded the ring and struck in unison, physically dismantling Maddox before unleashing the triple powerbomb on the overmatched ex-official.

That, it seemed, was Cena’s cue. Emulating The Shield’s time-honored tactic, the 10-time WWE Champion struck from the crowd, with Ryback and Sheamus entering through similar routes to surround The Shield in the ring. With a crew of The Shield’s old victims blocking any escape up the ramp, the trio had no choice but to mix it up with the triumvirate of powerhouses. It wasn’t long before they found themselves driven back from whence they came while Cena smirked in the ring, having finally given his tormentors a taste of their own medicine.

But Cena wasn't done there: After Raw went off the air, the 10-time WWE Champion laid down a jaw-dropping challenge before the WWE Universe: At the Elimination Chamber pay-per-view, Cena demanded The Shield answer to himself, Ryback and Sheamus in the form of a Six Man Tag Team Match.

Bourbon Street, we hope you're ready for this one.
